Dr. Damita’s Mission

“I recognize that women grappling with physical health symptoms and chronic illness often feel alone in their journey to find diagnosis, treatment options, and community.

As a Cherokee grandma with chronic illnesses and a health psychologist, I am PASSIONATE about educating women on advocating for their needs in the healthcare system, trusting the wisdom of their bodies over the voices of "experts," exploring effective alternative treatments, and understanding the impact of past traumas on their health to move beyond their symptoms and move towards their life goals.”

Testimonials

  • "I attended the workshop facilitated by Dr. Damita a few weeks ago, at the time when I needed to the most and it was at truly at right time. I am a mental health professional and openly admit that I have struggled and often continue to struggle with taking care of me. After being diagnosed with a chronic health condition in 2020, then at the start of the New Year experiencing Bells Palsy, I am facing a true journey of reconnecting with myself. There are moments where I wondered where do I begin and Dr. Damita crafted an experience that gave me an idea on where to go next. I have been trying to be consistent and take care of my health mentally and physically since. I highly recommend anyone facing chronic health conditions to check out the amazing work Dr. Damita is cultivating!"

  • "Dr. Damita speaks from the heart in her workshops using rarely found energy when speaking about trauma. She doesn't shy away from sharing her own story and experiences throughout the day and weaves in practical application. There are many opportunities to share and apply skills that she is teaching in the moment. I would recommend her workshops to anyone and everyone I know!"

    SB

  • "Dr. Damita you are warm, relatable, and immediately engaging. You use humor at appropriate moments, which can make the really heavy topics you are discussing less intimidating and more approachable. I think your topic is a hugely important topic considering women, and Black women in particular, are consistently ignored, gas lit, accused, and murdered in the medical system and therefore the system as an entity feels like an abuse/victim relationship. This work is IMPORTANT and you are the perfect person for it considering your up close and personal experience with it, paired with your clinical knowledge and expertise. "

  • "Dr. Damita developed and delivered an engaging workshop. It was educational, reflective, and fun. She always acknowledges each person's contribution and considers the participants' diversity. It was a very pleasant experience. "

  • "Your strengths as a speaker are that you balance both your energy in a way that is incredibly soothing while also being engaging. When I think of many speakers, they are often high energy. I don't experience you that way and I believe this balance is something that comes naturally to you... I appreciate that you bring personal experiences to your speaking. I wish I could have video-taped my reaction as I read that you are speaking to women with chronic illness and helping them with their self-advocacy. I actually said "oh my god, yes." A number of client cases come to mind along with so many other folx without chronic illness but who face medical professionals and cannot advocate for themselves. It sounds EXCELLENT!"

    MK

  • "Your strengths are the ability to connect with the audience. You use some self-disclosure but not in a way where it takes direction off what they want to get out of the presentation. You sprinkle it in here and there. You go girl."

    DL

  • "Your strengths as a speaker are that you are very knowledgeable and specific while being caring and compassionate. Speaking to women with chronic illness in self-advocacy is a manifestation of your caring/compassion – supported by your knowledge and personal experience."

    PL

  • "Your strength as a speaker comes from your warm yet confident personality that lets people know you have expertise in the subject matter you are discussing. I think this talk is incredibly necessary and timely given the increased awareness around chronic illness and how a lot of people deal with chronic illness have not been able to explain to others (or others have not been listening) how chronic illness really affects quality of life and one’s abilities in one’s body. "

    AJ

  • "You always bring in good examples and concretize the subject so people can see it. People in chronic pain feel angry and sharing your history of being challenged with chronic pain and your lived experience engages the audience. "

    BT

  • "We loved having you in that class!… One strength was how clear it was that you spoke from deep experience--there was a comfort with the material and nuance when you answered questions that communicated to students a thorough knowledge of the topics (and, as many skilled speakers do…you also asked some rhetorical questions that were related that they probably hadn't considered). I also really appreciated that you stayed on topic--I've had other speakers who swing wildly to right and left field constantly, and your sharing always seemed relevant and useful to the issues at hand. I also love that speaking topic--as I must have shared with you, many members of my family have dealt with chronic illness and have struggled with self-advocacy (this shows up for them in relationships too, regarding their health needs and challenges)… I admired the way you spoke about grief and loss, and what kind of mindset one needs to have to do that work well."
